Description

We have designed this three-hour private tour through the Historic center of Naples to show you around the beautiful gems this magnificent city has to offer. Your local expert will walk with you along the famous Spaccanapoli street that cuts the city in two parts. The colorful characters that sing in the streets, scooters buzzing by the winding narrow streets and the smell of fresh laundry hanging from the windows in the beating sun are what makes Naples so charming and unique.

We will start the day visiting the Chiesa del Gesù where we can find the highest concentration of Baroque paintings and sculptures from the most influential Neapolitan artists. The Chapel houses the tomb of saint, doctor and miracle worker Giuseppe Moscati (1880-1927).  It is covered with silver ex-votos (an ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint, and in this case are small reproductions of the parts of the human body that have been healed. It is given in fulfillment of a vow, gratitude or devotion to the saint).

After, we will proceed to the gothic style Santa Chiara Church/Convent specifically to see its beautifully decorated cloister that is well-known for its 30,000 polychrome majolica tiles. The colors of the tiles are reminiscent of the trees and plants that decorate the cloister: lemons, vines, wysteria. It is a little corner of paradise in the heart of the bustling downtown area of Naples. While walking to our next stop we will have a coffee break where you will have the chance to taste the best Sfogliatella and Babà (two typical traditional Neapolitan pastries).

Next on the must-do list is visiting the inside the awe-inspiring Baroque Chapel of San Severo.  It is one of the most enigmatic Chapels in Europe, with masonic symbols, tales of initiations and mind-blowing sculptures.  The creator, Raimondo di Sangro, was known as the Leonardo Da Vinci of the time: an inventor, interested in the human body, art, and esoteric. The Chapel, which was a private Chapel of the San Severo family, is decorated with many masonic symbols which our local expert will help you decipher. The real star though, is the Statue of the Christo Velato (Veiled Christ), which sits in the center of the nave of the chapel.

. The work, created in 1753, is considered by many as the most impressive works of art in the world. Among his admirers is Antonio Canova who, having tried – unsuccessfully – to buy the work, declared himself willing to give ten years of his life to be the author of such a masterpiece. Giuseppe Sanmartino created a work where the Dead Christ, lying on a mattress, is covered with a tissue-like veil that perfectly adheres to its forms. The Neapolitan sculptor was able to convey the suffering that Christ experienced the moments just before the Crucifixion through the composition of the veil, from which one can see the signs on the face and body of the martyrdom he suffered.

The next stop on the tour includes a walk along a famous street of the Nativity Scene makers, called San Gregorio Armeno. This lively area, open 365 days a year, is an open air museum for those who love the Presepe (nativity crib) tradition. Here every day, artisans exhibit not only traditional hand-crafted figurines but everyday items like food to the most modern and irreverent like statues representing the “person” of the year that stood out in a positive or negative way. Don’t be shocked to see a Donald Trump in a crib…
